We are Paid a Visit by Rotary Charities
Marsha Smith, Executive Director, was the first of two speakers from Traverse City-based Rotary Charities.
Rotary Charities was established in 1977 by the Traverse City noon Club. It serves five counties (including Benzie County) and makes grants of $1.2 to $1.5 million annually. Over the years it has made some 800 grants totalling more than $40 million. Rotary Charities currently has $42 million in assets.
Marsha described the two types of grants that Rotary Charities provides: one-year grants such as the one given to the Crystal Lake Art Center (basically covering brick and mortar) and multiple-year grants such as the one recently given to BACN. She also explained how her organization uses Rotarians in the grant process, noting that the day's program doubled as Rotarian Voluntary Grant Investigative Training.
