Benzie County Undersherif Bill Sholten provides an update on local law enforcement in a time of budget cuts.
A veteran of the Michigan State Police, Bill became Undersheriff when Rory Heckman was elected Sheriff several years ago. The two of them have pursued a goal of changing the perception of the Sheriff's office--both within the Department and within the community--from enforcers to public servants. To this end they have emphasized training, improved record-keeping and follow-through.
They also have made technological improvements to bring the county up to date. While this has been increasinly dificult as funds from the county have become scarce, the Sheriff's office will continue to try to be a team player with the County Board of Commissioners.
