Muskegon Rotarians Contessa Alexander and Andy Buelow spoke to us via Zoom about their Club's progress in promoting diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI).
As noted in their slide presentation, the DEI Committee and the "Love Lives Here" movement followed an incident in 2017 when a noose was found on an elementary school playground in Muskegon.  Community leaders responded and the Muskegon Rotary Club responded.

Muskegon Rotary recognized that with a predominantly older and white membership it lacked diversity. The club took steps to enhance diversity within the club and to celebrate the vibrant cultural tapestry of Muskegon.

Specific steps taken by the club included:
  • Community Mixers
  • Book Discussions and the annual Big Read Program
  • Rotary club meetings educating members on DEI issues
  • Creation of a strategic DEI plan
  • DEI Training
  • DEI Reflections
Going forward the Club's goal is to foster a diverse membership that authentically mirrors Muskegon's vibrant community.
