Marcia Billings, Past President of the Traverse Bay Twilight Club, brought us up to speed on the international clean water initiative established by our District.

Of the 6.5 billon people in the world, more than 3 billion lack access to safe drinking water. Through efforts started by two Rotarians in Rockford, Thirsting to Serve was established to develop and distribute low-cost, effective water filters around the world. As a member of the Thirsting to Serve Speakers Bureau, Marcia has been traveling around Clubs within District 6290 to garner support for a grant request to send 9000 water filters to the Dominican Republic.

Marcia went to Honduras to help install filters and described her experience as life-changing.  The HydrAid biosand filters that replaced the old concrete ones have proved most effective, as long as they are accompanied by education, education and more education.  Further information about the current initiative can be found on www.ThirstingToServe.org.
