Kelly Ignace of American Waste described the family-owned business that has built one of the finest recycling centers in the nation.

American Waste & Recycling is northern Michigan’s only locally owned and operated garbage collection and recycling center. Based in Kalkaska, the company recently completed a $12 million project at the site of the old Tower Automotive plant in Traverse City. The new facility processes three streams of waste:  Municipal solid waste, single stream recycling, and construction and demolition waste. The first stream is what we would consider trash, and it is processed at 25 tons per hour with a 50% recovery rate.  The second comes from recycling centers (including those in Benzie County), and it processes 15 tons per hour with a recovery rate in excess of 95%.

The company employees more than 300 workers in Traverse City and is proof positive that recycling is no myth.  Locally American Waste makes a huge difference in what resources we are saving rather than burying.
