A Frankfort native and MSU graduate, Shauna Treter explained the programs of her organization.

Established in Benzonia in 1995, the Michigan Land Use Institute is a non-profit advocacy group that seeks to protect the environment, strengthen the economy and build community. Its programs are concentrated in three areas:
  • Clean energy
  • Thriving communities
  • Food and family
Thus, MLUI promotes energy efficiency and smart growth. It also increases opportunities for local farmers through its "Taste the Local Difference" campaign. It has produced food guides for five different areas--including Benzie and Manistee Counties--and also works with legislators on a state-wide basis.

Now based in Traverse City, MLUI has an annual budget of $1.2 million and has 15 full-time employees. It also works with two FoodCorps workers, one of whom is Katie Zbrozek.
