The Club Receives an Update on Munson Healthcare

Munson consistently ranks as one of the top 100 hospitals in the country. As a community-based health system Munson is sensitive to local opinion, and one result of its merger talks with Spectrum was the ramping up of its communication with the public. Munson will continue to look for partnerships or other relatonships that will be mutually beneficial to the parties.

Paul described the revenue challenges faced by Munson and other health systems. While Munson is considered an efficient, low-cost provider of health services, under either version of healthcare reform it anticipates a revenue reduction of $100 million over the next ten years. To survive Munson and other health systems will need to re-design care rather simply engage in "cost-cutting." This will entail an emphasis on value rather than volume.
