We met under the tent at the Crystal Lake Golf Club not only to hear from Brandon Seng about Goodwill's new "Fresh Start" mobile food service, but also to sample its locally-sourced food.

Brandon Seng, Director of Food Operations for Goodwill Industries of Northern Michigan, has been working on feeding healthy food to area families since 2008.  This involves not only feeding the hungry, but also educating them about fruits and vegetables.  While we have a robust agricultural community, many farmers are poor.  Brandon's efforts include developing employment opportunities for the under-employed on farms and elsewhere.  This includes a hospitality training program and job placement with cooperative local employers like Crystal Mountain Resort & Spa.

With refrigerated trucks and dedicated employees and volunteers Food Rescue provides scheduled pick-ups and deliveries from food donors to food pantries and other recipients throughout its service area.  Working to eliminate barriers and provide greater access to food, each year Food Rescue provides 1.5 million pounds of food to 47 food pantries.

The Fresh Start program also helps local growers by making their fruits and vegetables available for purchase at Shop 'N Save and other local supermarkets.

After fielding numerous questions from an appreciative audience Brandon received a Benzie Sunrise check from Kris Thomas for $1,000.
