Kimmee Wenkel is the Executive Director and Co-Founder of Cognition, a nonprofit science and discovery center in Beulah. This tortoise is one of several live animals on display there.
Cognition is a museum-style center full of interactive exhibits. Kimmee gave us an update on developments at the center, the result of no fewer than five grants this past year. The grants--from such sources as Impact 100, the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa & Chippewa Indians and Rotary Charities-- have allowed the center to make improvements on such things as doors and windows, fencing for the side yard and additional plumbing outside. By May the center expects to have a virtual program with four stations up and running.
In addition to her oral update, Kimmee provided us with a tour of the facility and its attractions. providing bios for a guinea pig, lizard, two tortoises and a ball python. She also showed us the circuit wall made possible by a grant from the Benzie Sunrise Rotary Foundation.
