Benzie Central Track and Cross-Country Coach Asa Kelly educates the Club on Phase 2 of the Benzie Central Athletic Complex Project:  Back the Track!

Benzie Central is known throughout the state for its track and cross-country prowess.  But its track--originally installed in 1996-1997--has deteriorated to the point that it cannot be used for competitions.  To address this situation a committee was formed this past June by the Benzie Central High School Athletic Boosters and other school supporters and concerned citizens.  The result was a four-phase plan known as the Benzie Central Athletic Complex Project.

The project has now reached Phase 2, which entails removing and replacing the asphalt track surface.  After taking competitive bids, the Committee has determined that re-doing the track surface will cost $180,150.  The school does not have the resources to take on such an expenditure, and a bond issue is not practical. Consequently, boosters have turned to fundraising in the community.  Fundraising efforts have included an Olympic Challenge in Beulah with Olympic silver medalist Nick Willis, a $2,500 matching challenge from Riverside Canoe Livery and a variety of other events.  As of 12/12/15 the group had raised $101,840.75.

Fundraising efforts are continuing, and when the Committee has raised $150,000--hopefully by June--the work on the track will commence.  The track is used by the whole community, and everyone is urged to support the renovation.
