Allison Beers, Michigan Blood's Northwest Michigan Public Relations Coordinator, provided the Club with insight into the blood collection and distribution process in Michigan.
Michigan Blood is one of only two blood collection organizations in Michigan (with American Red Cross being the other), and they are the sole provider of blood to several hospitals, including Paul Oliver and Munson.  In order to meet their demand, Michigan Blood must collect 2000 pints of blood every week.  Allison indicated that even though 37% of adults meet the criteria for blood donation, only 3% of adults participate in the program.  Michigan Blood's headquarters is in Grand Rapids, they employ 400 people, and receive volunteer support from 500 community members.  For more information on Michigan Blood, please visit their website at www.miblood.org.
