Today We Learned About the County Road Commission

Nancy Roseman, Engineer/Manager, was the first of two speakers from the Benzie County Road Commission.
County road commissions were created by the Michigan legislature in 1909, and the Benzie County Road Commission held is first meeting in 1930. The Road Commission has a separate budget from that of the county. It is funded by the Michigan Transportation Fund, which in turn receives revenues from the gas tax and from registration fees. Because the tax on gas and diesel fuel is so many cents per gallon, funds received by the Road Commission have stayed at old levels while costs have gone up.
