Val Stone talked about the Northwest Food Coalition for which she is the Community Services Coordinator.

The mission of the Coalition is to meet the hunger needs in Antrim, Benzie, Grand Traverse, Kalkaska, Leelanau and Wexford Counties, as well as to address the greater issue of poverty.  Within the six-county area the Coalition has 34 pantries and 26 meal sites.

While one hears on the news of our improving economy and job market, this is not true for poor people.  There are not that many available jobs in Benzie County, and there is a shortage of affordable housing.  Thus while the need for food is increasing, it is always difficult to find sufficient funding for pantries and meal sites.

There were almost 40,000 visits to Coalition pantries in June of 2013, and the number was almost the same in June of 2014.  Val told how difficult it is for those who must rely on food pantries and urged us all to be compassionate and supportive. (Click on picture for a larger view)
