Bill Storrer tells us about France's tallest completed cathedral.

Architectural historian, author, photographer and play director (among other things), Bill Storrer shared his considerable knowledge through a PowerPoint presentation about an architectural wonder that is a World Heritage Site.  Built of limestone from a nearby quarry, construction began in 1220 and was completed in 1269. The cathedral was not only a church; it was also the seat of a bishop.

In evaluating the structure Bill said that it was all about height:  the huge flying buttresses "reach toward heaven."  Among the many architectural features of the building are gargoyles that function as downspouts.  The detail of the statutes and illustrations inside the cathedral were critical, because when the cathedral was built, common people were illiterate.

A good site to add to the itinerary for your next visit to France!  (Click on picture for a larger view.)
