Coordinator Marlene Wood describes Benzie County's  recycling program.

Marlene and other County officials are happy that Benzie County has no landfills and instead has embraced recycling.  All of Benzie County's townships have agreed to support the recycyling of household wastes, which entails a surcharge of $22 a year per family.  Thus, this is a household business supported with household funds.

Benzie County has recycling containers (recently refurbished) at seven different locations.  These offer 24/7 single-stream recycling, which means that everything but glass can go into the large recycling bins.  The county is under contract with American Waste, whose Traverse City facility Club members have toured.  Marlene,  who has been recognized as Recycling Professional of the Year, says not only is recycling the right thing to do, it also makes dollars and cents.
