Beulah optometrist Dennis Pace described the volunteer medical mission in which he participated in Haiti.
Along with Traverse City opthalmologist Martin Arkin and local resident Susan Koenig, in November of 2011 Dennis traveled to a small village in the countryside to help Haitians with eye problems. The first such mission was six months after the major earthquake. There is extreme poverty there, and thousands of children are homeless. Most of the patients have never before seen a doctor, and even the eye charts provided a challenge. In addition to examining patients and prescribing treatment, Dennis and the other professionals spent time training locals.
