Dave Taghon of Empire told us about the introduction of Coho Salmon to the Platte River in 1966 and the fishing frenzy that followed in 1967.
With a video presentation that included many photos from the time, Dave took us back to the summer of 1967, when cars would line up from Platte Point to M-22 for an opportunity to catch salmon that were brought to the area to help control alewives, as well as increase tourism. After a summer that saw more than a thousand boats a day in Platte Bay, the area was hit with a violent storm on September 23, 1967 that claimed seven lives.  Dave's presentation included pictures of several businesses ultimately sold to the Park and removed from the area surrounding the lower Platte River.  A fascinating program!
