Benzie Sunrise Rotarian Paul Clulo entertained the Club by sharing his perspective on our judicial system.

A semi-retired Circuit Judge, Paul spends half of his workday addressing family matters, one third on criminal matters and one sixth of his time trying to get individuals to settle in circuit cases.

Paul shared his views on mandatory sentencing, focusing on individuals facing prison time due to drug related offenses. Over the past 30 years, funds used to house inmates that have committed drug related offenses has quadrupled - climbing from $400,000 to $1,600,000.  As a result, 10 years ago, Michigan's budget for corrections surpassed the education budget.  Paul shared that using a more practical approach to sentencing for certain drug related offenses is being discussed in the legislature.

Thank you Paul, for a very informative and lively presentation!
