Shaun Anchak has been running Benzie County's Probation Department since 2003. He also is its chief officer.

As Chief Probation Officer, Shaun gets involved in every Benzie County criminal case in which there is a conviction. First he conducts a pre-sentence investigation of the defendant, including his or her family background and prior record, and then he prepares a report that he submits to the court. If the defendant is put on probation, Shaun sees that the offender complies with its terms.  His responsibilities are similar when a prisoner is released on parole.

Thus the probation officer is part of the justice system's repair program.  The challenges in rehabilitating offenders are several, including finding housing and employment stability.  Substance abuse is frequently an issue, and Shaun characterized it is a major problem in Benzie County. The Probation Department refers clients to those in a position to help them and also works with prospective employers.

Daunting as the challenges may be, Shaun is doing exactly what he went to school to do.  His dedication was evident to us all.
