Today we heard the life story of our newest member, Benzie County Sheriff Ted Schendel.

A native of Dearborn, Ted started at MSU the same year his parents moved to Benzie County.  He graduated with a degree in Criminal Justice.  His 35 years in law enforcement began in Florida, where he met and married his wife, another police officer.  After 25 years Ted retired, but not long thereafter moved to Benzie County and back into law enforcement.  At his wife's urging he ran for and became Sheriff in 2012, and he is leaning toward seeking reelection in 2016.

In Ted's view Rotary's motto of Service Above Self equally describes a police officer's job.  The biggest issues presently facing the Sheriff's office are budgetary (the Sheriff's goal is to have two deputies on duty 24 hours a day) and the county's drug problem.  The drug problem is particularly troublesome because all of the other problems it causes.  To combat the problem Ted wants to bring a substance-abuse program back to the schools--directed to 6th graders and with an emphasis on health.
